Excellent work with the blog. Would “colonization” be a better tag than illegal occupation ?

    • Sentani says:

I would say that the term ‘illegal occupation’ is the correct term.
West Papua is under Indonesian control because the ‘Act of Free Choice’ was not legally observed by the Indonesian authorities. Under the terms of the New York Agreement, the Papuan people were promised ‘one person, one vote’. The fact that in the resulting vote only 1024 people were allowed to vote out of a population of over 800,000 highlights that the vote was not legally representative. The occupation is therefore illegal under international law

The reason for preferring “colonization” as a tag is to draw the subject to the attention of more people who’ve expressed an interest or concern about ‘colonization’ on the wordpress site. Regarding the the Indonesian occupation, the word Jakarta & Freeport don’t want you or anybody else to use is ‘colony’ or colonisation / colonization which are fundamental national abuses which the United Nations was created to stop after WW-II.

The 1962 New York Agreement itself was illegal. By 1962 it was against international agreements (e.g. UN General Assembly resolution 1514) to trade a colony between colonial powers such as the Netherlands & Indonesia. And in domestic law a contract (the Agreement) violated principles of contract law because the contract of sale claims it is being done for the benefit of the West Papuan people, but the US Dept. of State records released in 1995 state it was written for benefit of the United States of America.

There was no legal basis for the Agreement, only a fiscal basis that Freeport director Robert Lovett in 1960 wanted the Papuan gold & copper which any Indonesian General would be happy to license to Freeport in exchange for Freeport manipulating Kennedy into creating the New York Agreement.

I’ll happily include ‘colonization’ in all future tags on posts on this site, and will also amend previous posts too.

    In solidarity

to check it out. An interesting video you have here.
The internet has allowed the old ones new ways.
I truly hopes it works for them and their plight.
