Victor Yiemo – urgent appeal

**Urgent appeal**
Victor Yiemo, the chairman of the National Committee of West Papua, a student-based organization, campaigning for a UN-sponsored referendum in Papua, has been arrested by police in Jayapura for his involvement in three peaceful protests.
Yeimo used to study economics at the August 17 University in Surabaya, Java, but dropped out of school to join the movement.
His arrest is a further sign that the Indonesian authorities are stepping up their crackdown against Papuans. Yeimo has always advocated a peaceful solution to West Papua’s future. His arrest is another knot tied round the Papuan peoples necks. Their voice is being silenced.
In the West Papuan highlands now all areas are ‘off limits’ to foreigners, and Hercules planes are arriving 5 times a day in Wamena dropping off troops and military.
The international community must unite against this suffocation of the Papuan people. Time is running out
