The day after the US Congress held their first ever hearing on human rights in West Papua, it has emerged that the new Indonesian Ambassador to the US played a central role in covering up the murders of thousands of East Timorese during the brutal genocide carried out by Indonesia there in 1999.
Dino Patti Djalal was the spokesperson for the Indonesian taskforce for the referendum in East Timor in 1999 and he consistently tried to portray any violence as between the East Timorese when it was clear that the violence perpetuated by the Indonesian militia and security forces. Thousands of people including women and children died in the massacres that Dino Patti Djalal attempted to cover up.
If the US wants to send a serious message to Indonesia about the need to respect human rights then they will reject Dino Patti Djalal as Ambassador. He is a man with no respect for humanity – a defender of murder who is now also attempting to deny any wrongdoing by Indonesia in West Papua.
Let us all hope that justice will prevail.
